Probiotics good for prawn

Quirino State College in Region 2 has "research" as one of its mandate. The college’s R&D conducts research in inland fisheries to generate technologies that would help the inland aquaculture industry in the province to develop and economically productive. Recently, it conducted a series of researches using Exquisite water and soil probiotics (Exquisite Soil Conditioner).

The use of probiotics in agriculture is not a new technology as it is being applied in the fishery sectors of the United States, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, China and European countries with productive results. The most recent research was the use of Exquisite Probiotics in fresh water prawn (ulang) comparing prawns cultured in two earth ponds with 5,000 young prawns each.

One pond was treated monthly with Exquisite probiotics at the rate of 500 grams/hectare. The prawns in the treated pond grew faster, bigger and heavier than those in the untreated one. The color of the treated pond was greenish, an indication that planktons are thickly growing in the pond while the color of water in the untreated pond was brownish.

How does Exquisite probiotics work in aquaculture? (1) It inhibits the growth the pathogenity of pathogenic bacteria and viruses; (2) It enhances the nutrition of aquaculture animals by hastening the growth of phytoplanktons and zooplanktons; (3) It improves the quality of aquaculture water; (4) It lessens the use of anti-biotics and other chemicals, thereby, decreasing environmental pollution.
