PLDT vows support to admin’s digital push

MANILA, Philippines — Telco giant PLDT Inc. has vowed to support the government in its plan to move most of state transactions to the digital space.

PLDT president and CEO Alfredo Panlilio yesterday said the telco is ready to work with the government in its push to digitalize the delivery of public services.

“Recognizing the importance of public and private sector collaboration in accelerating the digital transformation, PLDT supports the government mandate to continuously improve the availability and performance of digital services in the country,” Panlilio said.

In particular, Panlilio said PLDT has the necessary infrastructure that the government requires in improving digital reach in the Philippines. The firm is spending up to P13 billion to put up in Sta. Rosa, Laguna its 11th and largest data center named VITRO Sta. Rosa.

The facility serves as the first in a series of data centers that PLDT will build for a total capacity of 100 megawatts. The firm wants to serve the ballooning demand for hyperscale, which refers to efforts by tech giants to acquire infrastructure that can hold up their data requirements.

Further, PLDT has invested in the Jupiter cable system to power up its data capabilities, tripling its international capacity to 60 terabits per second.

“These world-class infrastructures will build and drive the hyperscale ecosystem, which is a key economic ambition of the country,” Panlilio said.

“We are committed to work with both public and private sectors to empower Filipinos with digital innovations that unlock and share their infinite potential,” he said.

According to Structure Research, a firm specializing on Internet infrastructure, the Philippines is turning out to be one of the most promising sites in Asia and the Pacific for hyperscale projects. It estimates hyperscale investments in the country to hit $134 million by the end of the year.
