Philippines improves mobile video score, but still among lowest worldwide

MANILA, Philippines — Mobile video experience in the Philippines saw an improvement this year, but the progress was not enough as it remained among the worst among 100 countries globally.

The Philippines grew its score by 6.7 points to 42.7 in this year’s State of Mobile Video Experience Report by mobile analytics company OpenSignal.

The increase in the country’s score this year elevated it to the Fair territory (score of 40 to 55) from last year’s Poor category (score of 0 to 40).

The Philippines joined eight other markets – Bangladesh, Cambodia, Côte d’Ivoire, El Salvador, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Uzbekistan – that saw an improvement from Poor to Fair in this year’s report.

Overall, however, the Philippines’ mobile video experience score ranked 88th out of 100 countries, making it as the 13th worst globally.

In last year’s report covering 69 countries, the Philippines ranked last.

OpenSignal said a sizable 28 percent of countries ranked under the Fair category for mobile video experience this year, including large markets like US, Russia, Indonesia, and Philippines.

“In large emerging economies like Indonesia and the Philippines, the challenge for carriers is every bit as acute as it is in developed markets, because consumers routinely rely on their phone as their main, sometimes their only, digital device,” it said.

“This means mobile video viewing may not only be a personal preference because a football game happens to be on at a slightly inconvenient time when someone happens to be away from home, but in these mobile-first countries the smartphone is often simply the only screen available at home to watch the game,” OpenSignal said.

Mobile video experience takes into account picture quality, video loading time and stall rate.

Video experience is ranked by OpenSignal based on five categories namely, Excellend for those with scores of 75 to 100, Very Good for scores of 65 to 75, Good for scores of 55 to 65, Fair for scores of 40 to 55, and Poor for scores of 0 to 40.

Six countries landed in the Excellent category, led by Norway, Czech Republic and Austria at the top three spots.
