Bridge between Boracay, neighbor city under consideration

BORACAY ISLAND, Philippines (Xinhua) - The local government of Malay, to which the world famous resort Boracay Island belongs, is considering building a bridge between Boracay and Malay, a local official said today.

According to Engr. Roger Esto, director of the Aklan Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), the proposal of building the Boracay Bridge was recently presented by the local government during the presentation on the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUp) of Malay.

It is reported that the San Miguel Brewery Corporation has expressed its interest in funding the said Boracay Bridge. However, Mr. Esto said PPDO is still cautious about implementing the proposal.

"Aside from environmental and traffic concerns, another factor to be considered is the loss of livelihood of hundredths of boatmen who bring tourists to and from Boracay," Esto said in an interview today.

The PPDO also wishes to know the detailed traffic plan for Boracay once the proposed bridge has been constructed, he added.

At present, tourists have to take a boat to Boracay Island after they got off a plane at Caticlan Airport, Malay.
