The peace of Christ

Today, on Christmas day, may peace of heart and mind dwell in all of us.

As we get on with the years, we witness more and more the fragility of peace: of the difficulties of keeping peace with oneself, of being at peace with our neighbors, and of nations being at peace with each other.

It takes so little to break the peace in our hearts and minds. Impatience is a blight that comes so easily. Anger brews at the flick of a finger. It is easier to think the worst of someone than to bestow trust. Angst has become a fashionable attitude.

We are witness to society’s dysfunctions. Cuss talk in everyday conversation, kidnappings in the name of religious beliefs, mankind slaughter to keep political power, fighting among countries to maintain a war industry.

Even as we enumerate all these negative vibrations, let us find ways to bring back and keep our inner peace. Some of us may take a longer journey to achieving some form of harmony, but it can be done.

Let us learn to trust more when doubt seeps in, to be generous in the midst of our fortunes, to open our heart just a little more in the face of so much suffering around us, and to be on the lookout for those constant simple joys that abound us and that give us happiness.

In the name of Christ, let us nurture and love one another. Not just today, but for all the days of the year.
