A meaningful day

Yesterday, Christmas day, my eldest daughter and one of my sons flew home from the respective countries of their work. As our whole family sat down for Christmas lunch, my gratitude to the Lord for the countless blessings he continues to shower us could not have been more heartfelt.

For many Filipino families who have one or many family members working overseas, kinship during Christmas is a must, and modern day technologies have certainly allowed crisp communications across continents to soften the yearning and longing that comes with physical separation.

Contrary to what many sociologists had warned years ago when our countrymen were starting to take on jobs abroad, the spirit that binds Filipinos to their families remains strong.

And even if the world economy is beleaguered by a financial crisis that is growing in magnitude and scope by the day, and even if there is uncertainty in what the coming year will bring, we set aside all these trepidations to remember and relish the spirit of Christ with our loved ones.

This is wishing you all the grace of the Holy Day and the blessings of Christmas.
