Japanese ace lifts Global Cebu vs Ilocos

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Global FC banked on the brace of Japanese winger Shu Sasaki to trounce Ilocos United, 3-0, and get back on track Sunday night in the Philippines Football League at Quirino Stadium.

After Paul Mulders opened scoring with a 23rd-minute penalty kick, Sasaki followed it up with back-to-back goals as the People’s Club rebounded from its 0-1 loss to rival Ceres Negros (0-1) in the PFL and preceding exit in the AFC Cup.

With 10 points, the Cebu-based club vaulted into third spot behind unbeaten FC Meralco Manila (15) and JPV Marikina (12). For its part, Ilocos failed to add on its one-point card to remain stuck at the bottom of the eight-team tournament.

“It’s a good result for us,” said Global coach Marjo Allado after his wards secured their third win and first clean sheet in the PFL to somehow atone for the sorry setbacks in their two previous outings. “We needed this win.”
