Wildcard chess tourney set today
CEBU, Philippines - Aspiring Cebuano pawnpushers will have an opportunity to earn slots for the 2017 National Age Group Chess Championships Grand Finals through a wildcard tournament starting at 11 a.m. today at the Knight Attack Chess Cafe in Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
The competition, which will follow a 7-round Swiss system format, is Cebu's token as host of the national finals set for May 2-10 also at Knight Attack.
All the champions in 14 categories will join the early qualifiers from three elimination tournaments held in different parts of the country.
“I hope many Cebuano players can qualify. After NCFP granted us this opportunity, our goal is to fill up every category with a Cebuano player and hopefully we can achieve that,” said NAGCC National Finals local organizer Engr. John Velarde.
So far, only seven Cebuanos have made it to the national finals. They are Jerish Velarde, KC Belano, Jonas Dustin Bajo, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo) Laila Nadera, Jeremy Bajo and Spica Gonzales.
Registration fee is pegged at P350. For further information, one may contact FIDE Arbiter Marvin Ruelan at 0932-7152411 or 0926-7352951. (EBV) (FREEMAN)
