Ateneo assistant coach says sorry for Game 1 antics
MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles' assistant coach Gabby Severino issued an apology after a video of him flashing the dirty finger made rounds online.
The video showed Severino in a heated exchange with an unknown person during Game One of the UAAP Season 79 finals between Ateneo and La Salle. He then raised his middle finger thrice before heading to the Eagles' bench.
"The gesture was made in an emotional moment at the height of a heated exchange between our coaching staff and their management staff which should not have occurred in the first place," Severino's Facebook post read.
"That said, it is unacceptable behavior and I apologize to my family, my friends and both school communities. It will not happen again," it added.
La Salle alumnus and former Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste stormed Ateneo's bench and had to be restrained because he did not take Severino's actions well.
In response, the UAAP board released a memo on proper decorum during games, reminding both schools to “police their own ranks.”
Game Two of the best of three finals is slated today 3 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
