Alora, PH Olympians still finding their legs in Rio

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine delegation is all too grateful for the two-week head start in terms of arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The long 30-hour flight from Manila to Dubai to Brazil has taken its toll on the delegation of 10 athletes, 8 coaches and 3 officials who arrived ahead. Track and field athletes Eric Cray and Mary Joy Tabal along with their coaches as well as golfer Miguel Tabuena and his caddy have yet to arrive.

For taekwondo jin Kirstie Elaine Alora, the first order is to adjust to the time zone.

"The flight was long and tiring,” related Alora. “ But on the bus on the way to the Olympic Village, I was wide awake from excitement.”

The Filipinos are housed on the 11th floor of Building 2 of the Athletes Village. While reports from the Australian and British contingents have related the poor amenities, the Filipinos are lucky to escape most of the problems.

"For me,” pointed out Alora, “Ang pinaka-problem ko lang po is yung water; medyo mahina. The condo is ordinary but I think it is all right. I have been trying to soak in everything. Being in the dining hall with all my fellow Olympians, it feels good. You’re part of this one big community."

Further cause for excitement is that all Olympic athletes will be gifted with a Samsung Galaxt S7 smartphone.

"I heard that all Olympians will be given as Samsung S7 with an Olympic emblem on its cover,” said Alora.

She underwent some training with her coach on Monday after which she joined the rest of the delegation for some sight-seeing.

"Am not yet well adjusted to the time zone. Baligtad po yung tulog ko and I find myself talking to my friends in Manila. Nawawala ako. Akala ko same time lang yun pala napupuyat ko na sila.”

“But by Tuesday onwards, focus na talaga ako at kaming lahat sa training."
