Algieri: I have all the tools

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Chris Algieri thinks he has what it takes to beat Manny Pacquiao and “shock the world” when the two champions square off on Nov. 23 at the Venetian Hotel in Macau.

Algieri has a few things going for him. He’s younger and hungrier. At 5’10” he’s at least three inches taller. He also has a longer reach. And he’s undefeated.

The former kickboxer from Huntington has the motivation, perhaps even greater than Pacquiao’s. If he wins, he will only be the sixth man to beat Pacquiao inside the ring.

The stars will shine on Algieri if he wins the fight. But it’s a tough one. Pacquiao is an elite fighter, and despite going 2-2 in his last four fights remains the most exciting boxer today.

Algieri is nowhere near Pacquiao’s level.

When the bell rings next Sunday in Macau, Algieri could be fighting for his life.

The 30-year-old Algieri trained harder than before for the fight, from New York to Los Angeles and Macau for the final week heading to the fight.

Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title will be at stake at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

In a media conference call earlier this week, Algieri talked about what he’s got against Pacquiao.

“I’ve got length. I’ve got reach. I’ve got speed. I’ve got footwork and defense,” said Algieri, now in Macau, days ahead of Pacquiao who flies in tomorrow evening.

“But that’s not what’s going to be the difference in this fight. It’s not a tall guy versus a short guy – it’s Chris Algieri versus Manny Pacquiao.  It’s what I bring to the table versus what he brings to the table,” he said.

Algieri said more than his physical traits, he’s mentally ready for the fight.

“I think a lot of it has to do with my mental preparation and mind going into this fight as well as what we know from Manny.  We know Manny is a living legend and a hall of famer for sure.

“He’s one of the greatest fighters that ever lived.  For me, I have to go out there and be myself.  I have the talent and the tools to win this fight – I just have to go out there and perform,” said Algieri.

That’s all he has to do.
