Military to NPA: Observe Holy Week
CEBU, Philippines - The Western Visayas-based 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division of the Philippine Army has called on members of the New People's Army to observe Holy Week and take advantage of this Catholic event to spend time with their families.
Major Gen. Aurelio Baladad, 3rd ID commander, said: "We urged them (NPA rebels) to embrace peace and turn their backs from violence and armed struggle. This will also serve as their chance to spend a week of peace, freedom and tranquility in our democratic country, particularly in this region."
Baladad asked the NPA to "stop deliberate offensive operations against the people, ... in the spirit of peace," because the military will continue to secure and protect the public in every part of Western Visayas, especially those frequented by tourists who are observing the Holy Week.
The 3rd ID has been working closely with other law enforcement agencies, particularly the Philippine National Police, in securing vital installations and areas of convergence in the region, to ensure the week-long observance safe and secure for the people, said Baladad. — (FREEMAN)
