Ex-Rizal town mayor ordered arrested
MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to arrest former Rodriguez, Rizal mayor Pedro Cuerpo.
In a resolution dated Oct. 27 and released yesterday, the anti-graft court’s second division said the NBI should give a report on the implementation of the arrest order within 20 days.
“The court directs Dante Gierran, director of the NBI, to cause the execution of the warrant of arrest and submit a report,” the resolution read.
The Sandiganbayan said the NBI has yet to serve the warrant of arrest since Cuerpo’s conviction for defying a court order became final and executory last January.
Cuerpo and former municipal engineer Fernando Roño were sentenced to a maximum of six months in prison for ignoring a court ruling to process the application for a building permit of the Samahang Magkakapitbisig, an informal settlers’ group.
The court said the NBI general services division received a copy of the warrant dated April 27, 2017 on May 15.
Cuerpo and Roño were also disqualified from holding public office for 10 years, eight months and one day and ordered to pay a fine of P1,000 each.
