MANILA, Philippines — A retired police official and his son were killed in an ambush by unidentified assailants in front of a cockpit arena in Mariveles, Bataan yesterday afternoon.

Senior Superintendent Napoleon Cauyan, former director of the Central Luzon Highway Patrol Group, and his son Napoleon Christopher, 21, died at the scene, according to Mariveles police chief Superintendent Cris Conde.

Probers have yet to determine the number of gunshot wounds suffered by the victims.

Conde said an autopsy would be conducted on the victims.

Cauyan and his son were about to enter the cockpit in Barangay Balon when they were ambushed at around 2:45 p.m.

The crime was not caught on closed-circuit television cameras installed in the area as there was a power outage.

Witnesses have different versions as to the number of assailants.

“One said there were two, the other said three,” Conde said.

Probers have yet to determine the motive for the killing.

Authorities are verifying information that the slain police official had survived an ambush on East Avenue in Quezon City in 2010.
