Pampanga plant closed over fish kill
APALIT, Pampanga, Philippines — An alcohol fermentation plant has been ordered closed after a reported fish kill along the Pampanga river.
Far East Alcohol Corp. (Feaco) was traced as the source of the molasses that spilled into the river and killed fish, crabs and eels, Apalit Mayor Peter Nocum said yesterday.
Nocum said Feaco admitted that their tanks containing molasses had leaked.
He said he would not lift the suspension of Feaco until it implements measures to ensure that the leakage would not be repeated.
Nocum also asked Feaco officials to provide compensation and apologize to those affected by the fish kill.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said a fish kill was also reported in the waters off Macabebe and Masantol towns.
