ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A soldier was killed and 10 others were wounded in an encounter Thursday against the Abu Sayyaf group while trying to rescue some kidnap victims in Patikul, Sulu.

The military said the Abu Sayyaf group also suffered casualties but cannot yet say how many.

Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command, said that Joint Task Force Sulu commander Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana reported the encounter occurred about 5:20 a.m. at Barangay Tanduh Bagwah.

Sobejana said troops from the 10th Infantry Battalion were on a mission to rescue hostages when they were engaged by the Abu Sayyaf militants, who fired on approaching troops.

The initial encounter left 11 soldiers injured, but one died from his wounds.

“Brigadier General Sobejana said ground forces saw several members of the Abu Sayyaf hit by the gunfire and fell but were retrieved by their escaping comrades,” Petinglay said.

Petinglay said there were no immediate details on the identities and nationalities of the kidnap victims but said that troops had been tipped off to their presence in the area.

She also said the encounter was not related to the emergency in Marawi City but part of continuing operations against the Abu Sayyaf group in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

“The troops have been aggressive in the conduct of operation to crush the Abu Sayyaf group and rescue all the remaining hostages,” Petinglay said.
