Metro

Number coding scheme back today

- Michael Punongbayan -
The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) lifted the five-day suspension of the Unified Vehicle Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) early this morning.

Vehicles with license plates ending in one and two are once again banned from all major roads, especially along the 24-kilometer Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).

MMDA General Manager Robert Nacianceno said no allowances will be given to motorists even for those coming from the provinces after the Holy Week break.

Nacianceno said motorists coming from provinces with vehicles banned by the UVVRP on Monday should be home before 7 a.m. Or they can wait for the window hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. before plying Metro Manila’s streets.

MMDA’s UVVRP, also known as the number coding scheme, is being implemented to control vehicle volume in the metropolis during rush hours.

It was suspended for five days starting Wednesday last week to give the public the opportunity to freely use Metro Manila roads during the Lenten break.

"It is now back and we expect the public to cooperate," Nacianceno said, reminding vehicle owners that the MMDA will be very strict in implementing the law.

The UVVRP bans vehicles from major roads in the National Capital Region (NCR) on weekdays depending on the last digit of the license plate. Vehicles, both private and public, with license plates ending in 1 and 2 are banned on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and 0 on Fridays.
