Cops kill alleged robber

MANILA, Philippines — A man died when he allegedly engaged police in a shootout shortly after he held up a woman in Manila at dawn yesterday.

Police identified the fatality as Melvin delos Santos, 30.

Police Officer 3 Marlon San Pedro of the Manila Police District homicide unit said Tricia Dizon, 23, a receptionist at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel, was waiting for a ride along Mabini street in Malate when Delos Santos declared the heist at past 2 a.m.

Delos Santos took Dizon’s money and mobile phone before fleeing.

The victim sought the help of Police Officers 1 Elpidio Ammogawen and Darrel de la Cruz, who were patrolling the area.

Policemen cornered Delos Santos along Quirino Avenue. But instead of yielding, he allegedly opened fire at police who returned fire.
