Retired Marine ambushed in Manila

MANILA, Philippines - A retired official of the Philippine Marines was killed in an ambush in Manila yesterday afternoon.

Retired Master Sergeant Jojie Omandac and his wife were in their Mitsubishi Pajero (OMA-999) on the eastbound lane of Bonifacio Drive when two men on a motorcycle attacked them at around 2:45 p.m.

Omandac was rushed to the Manila Medical Center but he died while being treated. His wife is unhurt.

The victim’s son, Police Officer 1 Andrei Paolo Omandac, assigned to the Manila Police District Station 11, and some of their neighbors rushed to the area after learning of the ambush.

Omandac was set to run for barangay chairman in the October polls, according to them. The Omandacs live in Baseco Compound.

Another son of the victim is studying at the Philippine Military Academy.

Ex-kagawad gunned down in QC

Meanwhile, former barangay councilor Jose Makimkim, 73, was shot dead in Quezon City on Monday.

Makimkim, who was in his car, was about to fetch his grandson from school when he was shot twice in the head by two men on a motorcycle in Barangay Tandang Sora at around 3:15 p.m., said Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, Quezon City Police District director.

A security guard of the school called the police for assistance as the assailants left the scene.

Eleazar said the attack “could be related to a land-grabbing incident. Our investigators are looking into it.”
