Airport cop disarmed over extortion

Rudy Santos - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – A member of the Manila International Airport Authority Airport Police Department (APD) has been removed from his post and disarmed on charges of extortion, MIAA general manager Ed Monreal said yesterday.

Airport Police Officer 2 Joseph Alday had been under surveillance for over three weeks following reports that he received protection money from drivers of colorum or unregistered taxis at different terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Monreal said.

Alday was detailed to the office of the APD manager while he is under investigation, he added.

Alday was filmed extorting money from a taxi driver and a civilian who admitted to acting as a dispatcher for the taxis linked him to the extortion racket, officials said.
