MANILA, Philippines – The University of the Philippines (UP) released the results of the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT) on Tuesday night.

A total of 1,591 high school graduates passed the UPCAT and are qualified to enroll next year in different programs offered in various campuses of the university.

Around 6,000 high school students took the exam on Sept. 18.

The number of passers for the 2017 intake slightly increased from the 1,558 students who passed the UPCAT last year.

The number of applicants dropped from the usual number of around 13,000 students due to the implementation of the senior high school program or K-12, which added two years in basic education in the country.

Only graduating students from early implementers of the senior high school program were allowed to take UPCAT for the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years.

The number of applicants is expected to increase next year as the first batch of K-12 students will graduate from senior high school in March 2018.

UP earlier said it was reviewing its admissions process to ensure that all students are on a level playing field when applying for a slot in the university.

“While admission into the UP system is selective with an acceptance rate of 15 to 17 percent for the best and brightest freshmen, UP also takes affirmative steps in its admission process to enhance the access of disadvantaged students to high quality education,” the university said.

The UPCAT consists of four subtests: Language Proficiency (English and Filipino), Science, Math and Reading Comprehension (English and Filipino).

Standardized UPCAT scores are combined with the weighted average of three years of high school final grades to determine the UP admission grade.

All examinees will receive notification by mail. Inquiries about the UPCAT results will be accepted starting Jan. 9 next year.

Students who did not qualify may apply in other UP campuses, or enroll at another university and transfer to UP Diliman after earning 33 academic units.

UP offers more than 170 programs in its eight constituent universities: UP Diliman (with an extension program in Pampanga), UP Baguio, UP Los Baños, UP Manila (with Schools of Health Sciences in Baler, Palo and Koronadal), UP Visayas (with campuses in Iloilo, Miagao and Tacloban), UP Cebu, UP Mindanao and the Open University.
