House speaker: No anti-dynasty law under PNoy
MANILA, Philippines - The pending anti-political dynasty bill at the House of Representatives will not be passed within the term of President Benigno Aquino III, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. admitted on Friday.
In an interview with ANC Headstart, Belmonte said there will be much focus and discussions on the proposed law, but he does not see its passage before Aquino steps down.
"That bill will definitely not pass in its present situation. It will need to be amended and so forth," a Belmonte, a former mayor of Quezon City whose family members are also in politics.
He also admitted that the pending bill may not gain the support of his colleagues at the lower chamber, which is dominated by politicians coming from political dynasties.
"Nobody else will agree with that," he said.
Belmonte reiterated that he supports a law that seeks to prevent families from wielding too much power and holding many positions in government. During the reopening of Congress last month, he called for the passage of such measure.
His statements came after President Aquino himself, whose parents were involved in politics, expressed his support for the controversial legislation.
In an exclusive interview with Bombo Radyo aired Thursday, Aquino said he is ready to sign an enabling law against political dynasties once it is passed by Congress.
He said, however, that the measure could curtail the political rights of government officials like him.
