Pimentel: Comelec should liquidate intel fund

MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III said Friday that he does not see anything wrong with the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) intelligence funds.
Pimentel, however, said that the Comelec should liquidate the intelligence funds, which reaches as much as P30-million under the poll body's present budget.
“I think it is in their budget, about P30M, if it’s allowed by law, they just liquidate in accordance with law,†said Pimentel, chairman of the Senate committee on electoral reforms.
Pimentel, meanwhile, said that former Comelec commissioner Gus Lagman should back up his claim that each commissioner received P7-million in intelligence funds without any use for it.
“He should prove it if he says there are irregularities. He can’t just insinuate,†Pimentel said.
The senator said that instead of the Senate, the Commission on Audit should look into Lagman's allegation.
“I think the COA should be allowed to look into it. Both are constitutional bodies,†he added.
