Spotlight for "Si Chris, Claire ug Merci"

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

Another artistic treat is happening this September. OurHouse, a proud Cebuano theater group of talented young thespians, is proud to present three one-act plays written by Josh Eballe and directed by Troy Tomarong. The plays are: "Dinhi Nalang ba Kutob ang Tanan?", "Ang Tulo ka Panagway ni Claire" and "Pit Senyor, kay Merci Kini."

From the production, the synopsis states: "Clay Hamilton, an American drama and critic once said that the most effective moments in theater are those that appeal to the basic and commonplace emotions like joy, sadness, anger, and fear to the complex like jealousy, ambition, uncertainty, and forgiveness. That, at the end of the play, the individual will say, "Yes, I have felt that way, too." Or, I can totally relate because that's the way I am. "I now know how to approach life." And this is the aim of "Si Chris, Claire ug Merci," as it expresses the basic of significant human experiences.

"Dinhi Nalang ba Kutob ang Tanan?" presents a powerful argument on what makes an individual truly happy. It is a question that one is ceaselessly searching for an answer-finding out what would truly make one happy. And so goes the question of where and how can we find it.

And "Tulo ka Panagway ni Claire" tells us the realization about our unique attitudes, dealing with such individuality and how we deal with forgiveness for one's limitations. Such forgiveness is hard to give when one is devoid of understanding the uniqueness of each one of us. We need to develop and maintain the capacity to forgive for one is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. Discovering this life's reality makes us less prone to hate those who have wronged us.

"Pit Senyor! kay Merci Kini" is about being how tolerant we are with differences. As we encounter and relate with others we find similarities and in the process we also discover the many disparities that we ought to deal with for co-existence. Judging someone based on our differences makes us intolerant of the uniqueness that the world has to offer. The problem lies when we focus so much on our differences, and in the process creating a lot of chaos and negativity. And if only we focus on what we all have in common – which is – we all want to be happy. And so the bottom-line is to share our similarities and celebrate our differences.

Catch OurHouse's "Si Chris, Claire, ug Merci" on September 9 and 10 at the Artists' Hall of Benedicto College, A.S. Fortuna Street, Mandaue City.

This is another opportunity for play enthusiasts to experience stage performance at its best in a language we are most comfortable with, and the morals we can all relate with and learn from. The lessons cut across generations and age levels and so making the play worth watching for.
