Honoring the leaders of the Cebuano Revolt in 1898

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

(Part 4)

There were 15 core members of the KKK Cebu. Let it be clarified that after the Battle of Tres de Abril (April 3, 1898), it was reorganized after some of them were killed. To continue:

8.) Florencio "Pinsoy" Gonzalez

F. Gonzalez St. in Cebu City in the Carbon area is named after him. He married Maria Guadalupe Unzon of Pagsanjan, Laguna. He served as Escribano (clerk) of the Juzgado de Primera Instancia (today's equivalent of Regional Trial Court called then as Court of First Instance). Florencio Gonzalez is not the only member of the Gonzalez Clan from Surigao who gave his life for our freedom, a brother by the name of Fortunato, a court interpreter, was also captured, imprisoned, and executed by the Spaniards under the command of Governor Adolfo Montero.

9.) Lucio Herrera

No street, monument, or even a marker was named after him. His complete name is Lucio Uy Chijon Herrera, a Chinese Christian who resided in Lutao (what is now known as Carbon). He was a pharmacist and belonged to the Principal Family of the city. It was in his house in Labangon that preparatory meetings where held. He was arrested but later released by the Spaniards.

10.) Jacinto Pacaña

No street is named after him. His complete name is Jacinto Calinauan Pacaña. Before and during the war Jacinto Pacaña was Capitan Municipal of San Nicolas from 1896 to 1898. Jacinto continued the struggle for independence even after the Spaniards left on December 1898. The sons of Jacinto were the youngbloods of the revolution, they were Felipe and Dalmacio. When the KKK of Cebu were overpowered by the Spaniards days after the Battle of Tres de Baril, Jacinto Pacaña decided to remain in Labangon and ordered Felipe and Dalmacio, together with Eugenio Gines who was wounded, the wife of Candido Padilla who was separated from her husband during the skirmishes, and a young lady by the name of Paz Javier, to go to the mountains of Barrio Bukawe. This is contained in the book written by Dionisio A. Sy entitled "A Short History of Cebu and the Anti-Spanish Revolution of Cebu".

The wife of Jacinto belonged to the Lopez Clan of San Nicolas, thus the complete name of Felipe Pacaña (he is the person honored by the street F. Pacaña starting in Tres de Abril Street in Barangay Punta Princesa and ending at Katipunan Street of Barangay Tisa) Felipe Lopez Pacaña. He was 20 years old during the revolution. After the revolution and the early years of the post-war revolution he served as a member of the city council of Cebu. The other members of the Pacaña Clan who were part of the revolt were Romana and Rufino. (To be continued)
