Bulusan spews ash anew

LEGAZPI CITY , Philippines  – Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon spewed ash again on Thursday afternoon, triggering a tremor that lasted for 26 minutes, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported yesterday.

Crispulo Diolata, Sorsogon resident volcanologist, said the mild phreatic explosion, which occurred at around 1:57 p.m., was not visible due to clouds covering the summit of the volcano.

Quakes were recorded around the volcano at least 63 times last month and 80 in January.

Phivolcs reiterated its warning to the public against entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone.

Diolata said the abnormal behavior of the volcano indicates hydrothermal processes.

Pilots were advised not to fly near the summit. Residents near river channels and valleys around the volcano were warned against sediment-laden and lahar flows in the event of heavy and prolonged rain.
