“Graika's story”

READER’S VIEWS - The Freeman

My expat friends and I have been seriously shocked by the suffering of this sweet little Filipina (Graika, pronounced Grayka)

We've thus been doing all we can, as fast as we can, but time is running out for her.

We beg you, therefore, to consider publishing her story to raise awareness among your readers.

I've written her story in poetic form, with a formal footnote. But if you'd prefer to run a more conventional story, we would, of course, be delighted.

With warmest wishes.

Once upon a time,

(Please forgive this rhyme)

There lived a girl called Graika.

She was the sweetest thing,

That God could bring,

No sweeter could he make her.

But by the age of three,

She couldn't see,

Because her eye got cancer.

And is that fair?

(Please say a prayer)

For we really have no answer.

But not once, NEVER,

NEVER, EVER, EVER,

Did Graika start complaining.

Instead she tried,

To play outside,

Even when it was raining.

But there was worse to come,

(And it leaves us numb)

For on her next (fourth) birthday.

Her cancer spread,

To her neck, and bled,

So damaging her airway.

Still not once, NEVER,

NEVER, EVER, EVER,

Did Graika start complaining.

Instead she tried,

To play outside,

For the time she had remaining.

So now she's five,

And still alive,

But needs some che-mo-the-ra-pee.

So we beg you, dear readers,

And your country's leaders,

To help us pay her doc's fee.
