Trillanes' last loose cannon

WHAT MATTERS MOST - Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez - The Freeman

They did it to former Senator Manny Villar. They did it to the late Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, who just passed away heart-broken. They did it to Vice President Jejomar Binay. Now they do it to Mayor Rody Duterte. But this time they shall fail. Duterte is made of sterner stuff. He is no pushover. He is a "provinciano." But the ilustrados, the oligarchs, and the candidates of the taipans and the moguls cannot bully him. This latest tirade of Trillanes is bound to blow up on his own face. This guy cannot hold a candle to the Davao mayor who has been "wounded and scarred" in the many battlefields of life and politics.

The administration party must be very desperate and even panicky this time that Trillanes, a tail-ender in the vice presidential contest, is allegedly being commissioned to explode a loose cannon and bamboozle the rising star of the presumptive winner for president. But by all appearances, this shallow gambit is bound to boomerang against Trillanes himself and against his alleged principals, no less than the Liberal Party and Malacañan supposedly. It is also going to generate more sympathy votes for Digong and shall push his lead wider over Poe and Roxas, Binay is almost a goner. And lady Miriam is not quite fit.

Not being a lawyer, Trillanes is unwittingly brandishing some worthless documents that cannot stand in court for the simple reason that they can be deemed illegally obtained evidence. Any freshman in law can tell the senator that they are not admissible in any court proceedings because they are virtually "fruits of the poisonous tree."

Whoever extracted those bank documents from BPI may be prosecuted for violating the Bank Secrecy Law, and other laws. And assuming, for the sake of argument that the mayor has such money, it is none of Trillanes' business. And owning such money is not a crime. In this campaign season, a lot of supporters could have contributed them to the campaign fund.

There is no allegation, much less any evidence that the money was ill-gotten. There is no case filed against Duterte. And so, what right does anyone have to question the ownership of a bank account? At this point in the game that Roxas and Poe have virtually lost all the rounds to a man they looked down as an unworthy opponent, they have concocted this desperate move designed supposedly to demolish the huge successes that the Duterte campaign achieved, despite the massive logistics and billions that the LP and the GAPUS (Galing at Puso) of Grace Poe have marshaled to stop the insurmountable lead of Duterte.

This last-ditch afterthought by Trillanes and his patrons have hatched is an indubitable proof of their desperation. Poe and Roxas must now be overwhelmed with fear of defeat. And Trillanes, not having even a China man's chance to win the vice presidency, has nothing to lose by allowing himself to be a means to derail the bullet train speed and velocity of the Duterte campaign.

But Trillanes should look at himself in the mirror and ask his good self what he has done in the Senate except to conduct investigations in aid of his ambitions.

At the end of the day, what matters most is that they cannot find any indictable offense on the part of Duterte. I'm afraid that somebody will most probably bite the dust and eat his words.
