Lourdes dela Rama Osmeña, the Grand Old Lady of the South

Sergio "Serging" Chiong Veloso Osmeña, who became governor of Cebu, Cebu City mayor, congressman and senator, married a daughter of a revolutionary general and senator from Iloilo, Esteban dela Rama.

The daughter of Senator Esteban dela Rama, the latter was called by President Manuel L. Quezon as the Grand Old Man of the South. Don Esteban was the founder of the Dela Rama Steamship and other business enterprises. The name of his daughter who married Serging Osmeña was Lourdes.

Serging was the youngest child of the first wife of Don Sergio Suico Osmeña Sr., Dona Estefania "Pepang" Chiong Veloso Osmeña. Serging was the namesake of the only Cebuano to become president, Don Sergio, The Grand Old Man of Cebu.

Lourdes dela Rama Osmeña was the daughter of Esteban dela Rama and Dona Natividad Aguilar. The father of Lourdes was elected senator in the election held on November 11, 1941. Senator dela Rama fellow Visayan senators were Vicente Rama (grandfather of Atty. Michael Lopez Rama, the present mayor of Cebu City), Mariano Jesus Cuenco (Great Grandfather of Councilor James Roa Cuenco, who is the son of former Congressman Antonio Veloso Cuenco), Carlos Polistico Garcia (who became president), Jose Fortich Ozamiz, Ramon Torres, Jose Yulo, and Manuel Acuna Roxas (grandfather of former congressman, senator, and DILG Secretary Manuel "Mar" Araneta Roxas).

Lourdes dela Rama Osmeña lived long to manage the vast haciendas and other business enterprises of Don Esteban dela Rama. Lourdes died at the age of 98 (she died on November 6, 2011). Lourdes died in a hospital in Bacolod City.

Serging and Lourdes have the following children: Sergio III (namesake of his father and grandfather) nicknamed as Serge, followed by Maria Victoria, nicknamed Minnie, Esteban nicknamed Stevie, Tomas, and Georgia.

Sergio III who was born on December 13, 1943 finished his secondary course at the St. Clements College in Iloilo City. When he came back to the Philippines after EDSA, he ran for Congress in the 6th District of Cebu. He however lost to Dr. Nerissa Soon Ruiz. In the next election, Serge ran under the Lakas-Laban Coalition senatorial ticket during the midterm election of the term of President Fidel Ramos in 1995. Serge won in the May 8, 1995 senatorial election, he placed 7th.

In the 1995 election, the fellow LAKAS-Laban Coalition candidate of Serge topped. She is Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who at that time was a member of the LDP or the Lakas ng Demokratikong Pilipino.

The fellow Cebuano winner of Serge at that time was the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Marcelo Briones Fernan (who resigned in 1992 to ran for the presidency and instead ran and lost as vice president, with Ramos as president and Joseph Estrada as vice president). Fernan in the 1995 election placed 10th and he ran under the LDP.

In 1998, Serge left LAKAS NUCD and ran as vice president of the Liberal Party with Alfredo Lim as his president. In that election, Joseph Estrada emerged as president with Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as vice President.

Senator Serge married Isabel "Bettina" Mejia Lopez, a member of the Lopez Clan from Iloilo.

The younger brother of Serge, Tomas, nicknamed as Tommy (born on July 26, 1948) became mayor of Cebu City beginning on June 30, 1988, in the first election held after the toppling of the Marcos dictatorship by the People Power Revolt in 1986. Tomas defeated Jose "Boy" Veloso Cuenco, the younger brother of Congressman Antonio V. Cuenco.

Tomas who was elected congressman of the Cebu City south district in 2010 married Margarita "Margot" Lim Vargas. The wife of Tomas is a member of the Cebu City Council. She is a relative of Atty. Jorge B. Vargas, the first Executive Secretary of the Philippines, who was appointed by President Manuel Quezon. The wife of Secretary Jose B. Vargas, who also became Boy Scout of the Philippines president, Marina Yulo Vargas of Iloilo City, is the woman honored by the name of the Girl Scout Camp in Cebu City called as Camp Marina Regional Program and Training Center.

A sister of Lourdes, the Grand Old Lady of the South by the name of Estefania, married Enrico Pirovano who became president and general manager of Dela Rama Steamship.
