VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

One year and three days to be exact, was the time spent after I sealed my name on a piece of paper. I took that long plunge into the work that I have always dreamed of. Feeling that little girl dream in me, that day was very instrumental to my career.

Since then I have seen a lot of things, met a lot of people, and traveled well enough. The journey wasn't easy, especially with the transition from being in school to going an office. I missed the classroom setting and the university hurdles that became so easy to me. This was a different world which I chose to delve into.

Looking back, I could say that the past year has been good. It has been very friendly to me, add to that the learning experience that has been slowly shaping my destiny. It has been a great year and I look forward to many years to come. Time is young and so are the days, might as well make use of it.

Similarly, it has been five years since our president sat down in office. I would not know if he would have any untimely realizations for the time being, but most likely he would. As to the depth of his reflections, only he can answer such.

Last week, he gave his final State of the Nation Address. It wasn't as emotional as I hoped it would be, especially it being his last and all that. Instead, it was more of an accomplishment report and a rubbing of salt on the wound left by the previous administration. Was that even necessary?

Yes or no, he had the freedom to say what he wanted to anyway. A lot of ordinary people chose to go about their regular day rather than hearing another hour of promises that they could not even feel at the very least. Some of them do not trust the president as much as there was a pocketful of hope when he sat down. For them, the changes he promised were never seen.

It is sad to note that there has been a surge of apathy wallowing in the souls of the Filipino people. Even key persons in the local government agencies chose to forego the speech in exchange of something better. But what could be any better by being involved in the country that you are in? Part of being a citizen is to immerse yourself in the state that you interact with and know what it has been for the past year, whether or not these are all true or not.

But at the end of the day, we need a better leader. Although this is not discounting the fact that he indeed did a good job being the president. This brings down to the point of choosing a leader next year who can exceed what the incumbent currently holds.

As of now the choices are lean, and some have not expressed their intention to run for public office. Let it be that at the top of our heads we know who has the capacity to lead a nation. Jingles and fancy merchandise do not tell us what, in their capacity, could happen if the nation is under their hands. It all boils down to responsible voting and wise choosing.
