MANILA, Philippines — It was a nostalgic affair last weekend as Ely Buendia, Ebe Dancel, Barbie Almalbis, Rivermaya and Itchyworms brought back the 1990s during the "GetMusic: NU107 Rock Years" concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Ely strengthened his legacy as a rock icon as he played his set, singing Eraserheads’ classics such as “Pare Ko,” “Alapaap,” “Magasin,” “Maling Akala,” “Spolarium,” “Super Proxy,” “Shake Yer Head,” and “Ang Huling El Bimbo” in a new arrangement but with the same '90s vibe. He performed these with his full band, composed of the usual bass, drums, and guitars, but with the addition of keyboards, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and three women backup vocals.

Among his band mates, bass player Carissa Ramos caught the concertgoers' attention as Ely described her as “the girl who have two million views on YouTube.”

The band’s rendition of “Magasin” was quite dramatic as it began with a slower tempo, with Ely’s voice dominating the air, then this was slowly backed up by the keyboard, and then later on, by other musical instruments, turning this classic E-heads song into a funky one.

Another artist who made the night special was Ebe Dancel, former front man of the band Sugarfee. Ebe reminisced having a dark moment in 1999, until Sandwich bassist Myrene Academia helped him and changed his life forever. At the concert, he sang Sugarfree's hit songs such as “Kwarto,” “Wag Ka Nang Umiyak,” “Prom,” “Telepono,” and “Burnout.”

Many vocalists might have come and go in the band Rivermaya, but last weekend night, the rock group proved that it still soars as it brought the house down with its hits “Umaaraw, Umuulan,” “Awit ng Kabataan,” “Kisap Mata,” and “Elesi,” to name a few. Also, original drummer Mark Escueta finally stood up and became the band’s guitarist that night.

Likewise, the ageless Barbie Alamalbis serenaded the crowd with her “Tabing Ilog,” “Firewoman,” “Limang Dipang Tao,” “Deep,” and “Torpe" hitmakers, while Itchyworms opened the night with “Ayokong Tumanda,” Beer,” and “Penge Naman Ako N’yan,” to name a few.
