Janine Gutierrez, mom Lotlot de Leon battle for Urian Best Supporting Actress

MANILA, Philippines — In a rare event, a mother and daughter will be facing each other as competitors for an acting award.

Lotlot de Leon and daughter Janine Gutierrez are both nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the 40th Gawad Urian Awards to be held on July 20 in ABS-CBN’s Studio 10.

Janine has been nominated for her role, Corazon, in the romantic period drama “Dagsin” (“Gravity”), a finalist in the main competition category of Cinemalaya 2016.

The independent film, written and directed by Atom Magadia, tells the story of Corazon and Justino, played by Benjamin Alves. The plot traverses different decades in Philippine history in its quest to find out what happened to Corazon and Justino during the Japanese occupation and Martial Law.

Lotlot is also in the main cast of “Dagsin,” but she has been nominated for “MRS,” where she plays a loyal house help to the character of Elizabeth Oropesa, who is also nominated for Best Actress at the 40th Gawad Urian.

The independent film, helmed by director Adolfo Alix Jr., was an entry to the 2nd Sinag Maynila Film Festival.

In the festival, Lotlot’s “MRS” already competed with Janine’s “Lila.”

Also nominated for for Best Supporting Actress are Rhed Bustamante (“Seklusyon”), Barbie Forteza (“Tuos”), Sharifa Pearlsia Ali-Dans (“Women of the Weeping River”), Anna Luna (“Paglipay”), Joan Dela Cruz (“Pagligay”), Lui Manansala (“Ned’s Project”), Ma. Zimadar Caranay-Raper (“Women of the Weeping River”) and Meryll Soriano (“Pauwi Na”).

In previous interviews with the press, Lotlot expressed how proud she is of Janine for being able to be nominated for acting awards at a young age. She said that she will be happy whoever wins between the both of them.

She always reminds her daughter to be professional and to give her all in everything she does, the same advice that she got from her mom, superstar Nora Aunor, who is also nominated for Best Actress at the 40th Gawad Urian for her role as a justice-seeking overseas Filipino worker in the Bicolano drama, “Hinulid.”
