MANILA, Philippines -  Philippine STAR columnist Danton Remoto was named the Best Opinion Columnist by Gawad Tanglaw in awards ceremonies held last April 24 at Insular Life Auditorium in Filinvest City, Alabang. Gawad Tanglaw is an organization composed of college and university professors nationwide.

Remoto has been writing for The Philippine STAR for the last 20 years, 18 of which were for the Lifestyle section and the last two years for the Op-Ed section. He graduated with A.B. and M.A. degrees in English Literature from Ateneo de Manila University and an M.Phil. in Publishing Studies from the University of Stirling in Scotland on a British Council grant. He also took graduate studies in World Literature at Rutgers University on a Fulbright Scholarship.

He is slated to defend his dissertation for the Ph.D. in English Studies, major in Creative Writing, at the University of the Philippines. The Asian Scholarship Foundation also gave him two fellowships to do research on Southeast Asian Literature at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) and the National University of Singapore.

Remoto has published 20 books and has won all the major literary awards in the Philippines, including the Cultural Center of the Philippines Literature Prize, Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards, National Commission for Culture and the Arts Award, Philippines Free Press and Philippine Graphic Literary Awards.

He was an Associate Professor at Ateneo de Manila University, worked as a Communications Officer at the United Nations Development Program, served as head of research at TV 5 and host of a daily radio show called “Remoto Control” at Radyo 5, 92.3 News FM.
