Edgar Allan Vilbar - The Freeman

BILIRAN, BILIRAN, Philippines — The Biliran National Agricultural High School played host to the Eastern Visayas's kick-off and launching of Brigada Eskwela for school year 2016-2017.

The event, held inside the school over the weekend, was graced by Director John Arnold Sienna of the National Educators Academy of the Philippines, who said it was historical "because this is also the school year that the K to 12 DepEd program will be implemented."

Sienna also acknowledge the community's involvement and the presence of local and foreign organizations for the Brigada event. "We are all here because we believe in education," he said.

All stakeholders of the Brigada were also reminded that it was not only a week-long activity, but a continuing process throughout the school year.

"We have to commit ourselves for the education of our children. Parents should get involved, community should continue supporting activities, Sienna added.

Biliran Schools Division Superintendent Carmela Tamayo said her office had been dealing with critics of the program.

"Controversies such as lack of classrooms, teachers and others abound, but we'll do our best for the children" she said to the crowd whom she also referred to as Bayanihan in Action and demonstration of community in action.

The United Nations Development Programme, meanwhile showed its support to the program by initiating the repair and rehabilitation of a multi-purpose building in the school-right after typhoon Yolanda devastation-supplying garden tools, wheel burrows and other hand tools for the school. — (FREEMAN)
