Demecillo, Tabanao also brace for tour of duty in Russia

CEBU, Philippines - Cebuano boxer Adonis Aguelo (27-14-2, 19KOs) gets another crack at a regional title as he challenges the unbeaten Russian champion Pavel Malikov for the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver lightweight title on December 17 at the DIVS Arena in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

The Mandaue City-native Aguelo once fought for the WBC Fecarbox super featherweight belt but lost by TKO to Mexican Adrian Estrella on February 14 last year at the Centro de Usos Multiples in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Aguelo, who is coming off three consecutive victories all by knockout, faces a tall order anew as he takes on Malikov, a hometown idol who sports a clean 9-0 record spiked with 3KOs.

The 30-year-old Malikov, Aguelo's four years senior, will make the first defense of the crown he snared after winning by retirement against Pinoy fighter Carlo Magali last November 18.

Before Aguelo battles Malikov, former Philippine super flyweight champion Marco Demecillo (22-5-1, 17KOs) of Iligan City will climb up the ring first against Valery Tretyakov (7-0, 3KOs) ) in a non-title bout scheduled for eight rounds under the featherweight class.

Aguelo and Demecillo's stablemate Neil John Tabanao (13-2, 9KOs) will also fight in Russia against Evgeny Smimov also in an eight-rounder this Sunday in Moscow.

Trained by revered Cebuano ring strategist Brix Flores, a Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medallist and Asian Games bronze medal winner during his prime, Aguelo, Demecillo and Tabanao are all fighting under the aegis of Thai boxing patron Naris Singwangcha. (FREEMAN)
