Yes, May 2, what year?

FEEL THE GAME - Bobby Motus - The Freeman

A challenge has finally been made by Floydie, boxing’s greatest mouth, to an 8-division champion who was obviously fed up with all the cowardly crap thrown at him. Several ridiculously unrealistic conditions were demanded including getting two thirds of the prize money.  As always, being the real and true fighter that he is, the challenge was welcomed by PacMan.  Setting aside these absurdities, the given date simply won’t do.

I would assume upper echelon fighters know when promoters schedule big bouts and who fights who as it would be their managers who will be doing the negotiating.  Naturally, communication lines will be busy and every fighter worth his boxing cuts and bruises will be considered and notified for their availability for a possible match on the specified date.

Enter May 2. The Mexicans have two big celebrations annually, their Independence on the 16th of September and the 5th of May, popularly known as Cinco de Mayo.  Let’s focus on the May celebrations.  Days prior to May 5, Mexico prepares for the anniversary of their victory against French invaders during the 1800s.  Like Cebu preparing for the week-long celebration of the Sinulog culminating on the third Sunday of January, so does Mexico, which they culminate on May 5, thus Cinco de Mayo.

A May 2, 2015 fight is being negotiated between Canelo Alvarez, a Mexican, and Miguel Cotto, who comes from Puerto Rico.  This falls within the Cinco de Mayo week and Mexicans, both living in Mexico and in the United States look forward to this as it would be one of the highlights of their national holiday.

PacMan and Mayweather are not Mexicans and it would be sacrilegiously insulting to Mexican and Mexican-American fight fans if their capms insist on this fight.  Promoters in their right mind would not dare risk the ire of the Latino nation considering that majority of the top rated fighters have Latino roots and consequences would be difficult to deal with.

Taking note of this important Mexican date, Floyd Jr. issued the challenge and the date knowingly aware and certain that the fight will never materialize.  He is obsessed with breaking Rocky Marciano’s record of 40 wins without a loss.  He will be choosing his opponent, conniving with matchmakers, making sure who he fights will just be a punching bag being hyped as the next or upcoming whatever.  Meanwhile, his mouth continues flap wildly, spewing recycled taunts and nonsense.

Without acknowledging, Mayweather had unconsciously proclaimed to world that he is deathly afraid of fighting Congressman Emmanuel Pacquiao because deep inside his bloated ego, the reality of his defeat is certain.  He can never deal with a loss.

Adding to his fear is the thought that PacMan has the whole Armed Forces, with all their outdated equipments, are behind him.  The Philippine Navy recently granted PacMan an honorary rank of Commodore, equivalent to that of a one-star general of the army.  Congressman Commodore Pacquiao.  Never in my wildest dreams that I will live to see the day of someone being addressed as such.  There’s no truth to the rumor that he will be commanding a fleet of dry docked ships.

I also wish that on PacMan’s next fight, promoters will find an opponent who can really box, not making the match an over-hyped sparring session.  Fans have learned their lessons with Algieri, the fighter with too much fanfare that in the end, what we all saw were six miserable trips to the canvass.

As I said in one of my columns, let’s cut the bullcrap on this fight.  It won’t happen.
