PAGASA: LPA may bring rains to Cebu

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)is keeping track of a rain-producing weather system that is approaching the country.

Engineer Alfredo Quiblat, officer-in-charge of PAGASA-Mactan, said the presence of weather disturbances like low pressure systems are enhancing the southwest monsoon or locally known as Habagat.

Quiblat said that an intensified monsoon may bring heavy rains to Cebu and other parts of the country even if not directly affected by the low pressure system.

PAGASA yesterday reported the entry of Low Pressure Area (LPA), a weather system characterized by cloudiness and rain showers.

As of yesterday afternoon, the LPA was spotted 235 kilometers east northeast of Surigao City.An LPA is also described as the area with the lowest pressure to where a tropical cyclone may be formed.

Quiblat, however, said there is a low possibility that the LPA will develop into a tropical cyclone since it only carries a weak circulation.Quiblat said Metro Cebu is seen to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies, and at times with chances of sunny periods within the week.

He added that intermittent rains or isolated thunderstorms may also occur over the province.

He said light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Visayas and small-scale fishers are warned from venturing into the rough seas.— /FPL (FREEMAN)
