Carcar opens own firing range

Iris Mariani B. Algabre - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - The City of Carcar has opened a two-hectare outdoor firing range in Barangay Poblacion 3 where police and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) personnel can practice target shooting.

Mayor Nicepuro Apura said the firing range is located beside the Carcar City Jail in Sitio Tacdog. It will be managed by jail warden Roger Daligdig.

Apura said the city government did not spend much for the firing range because the lot is owned by the city. The bays were developed using the city government’s equipment. He said the city only spent P40,000 for the processing of the permit from the Philippine National Police.

According to Apura, the firing range was granted accreditation by Camp Crame on July 8. The permit was signed by PNP chief Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

"This will also serve as practisanan sa atong mga police, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology ug katong legal nga mga gun enthusiasts," Apura said.

The mayor, however, said those who want to use the firing range need to secure a permit from his office. He said Daligdig will also make sure that only licensed gun holders are able to use the range.

The city used to have a private firing range but was closed after it failed to renew its license.

Daligdig said he is planning to upgrade the range into an international standard with 16 bays. The range only has 11 bays at present.

The range is also in preparation for the opening of the city college next year where Bachelor of Science in Criminology will be among the courses to be offered. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
