SWU-PHINMA, USPF make moves in Casino Active Cup/CYBL

CEBU, Philippines - Southwestern University-PHINMA and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation made their moves to the top as they trounced their rivals in the Division 1’s Under 19 age group of the Casino Active Cup / CYBL 2017 at games held over the weekend at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Mango Avenue campus gym and Aznar Coliseum.

The SWU-PHINMA Baby Cobras walloped USJR, 63-38, then nipped UV, 70-68 for its second and third straight wins without a loss in Group B, while USPF also went 3-0 via a 54-37 win over Abellana National School in a Group A game. In other Division 1 Under 19 games, Don Bosco defeated USC, 67-39, as USJR stopped PAREF Springdale, 64-55. The Titans recovered to beat SHS-Ateneo 2, 55-52. One on One tripped Abellana, 62-53. Mt. Olives School of the Philippines squeaked past SCSIT, 85-84.

In Division 1 Under 16 age group games, Don Bosco-A scored its fourth straight win without a loss, 45-37 over USC North. SHS-Ateneo 1 struggled past a tough Abellana side, 58-48. SWU-PHINMA beat USC South-A, 45-39, but bowed to USPF, 46-61. Don Bosco-A. USJR defeated Abellana, 53-44.

In Division 1 Under 13 games, UV is now 2-0 after defeating Don Bosco, 57-38. The Greywolves recovered a day later to nip SACS/Lapu-Lapu, 47-44. In the youngest Under 11 age group, USJR streaked to a 3-0 record after defeating PAREF Springdale, 33-27 in a battle of undefeated teams. But they later bowed to SHS-Ateneo, 40-57, a day later. UV nipped USC North-A, 28-26. One on One scored its first win, 45-21 over SCSIT. Springdale recovered to score a 35-25 win over USC South.

In Division 2 games, SWU-PHINMA went 3-0 in the Under 13 age group after topping SCSIT, 51-36, and One on One, 52-46. USC South is now 2-0 after it defeated USJR-B, 32-16 and Monterey School, 38-29. PAREF Springdale (1-1) beat SCSIT, 34-30.

In the Division 2’s Under 16 age group, USC South-B whipped and Girls, 62-32, then bowed to Mt. Olives School, 31-47. Mt. Don Bosco-B defeated Abellana-B, 40-30. GAB nipped Monterey, 37-35. Compre Basketball is now 2-0 after defeating ANS Girls, 49-21. In the Under 19 age group, Mt. Olives barely beat SCSIT, 85-84.

The Casino Active Cup/CYBL 2017 had its busiest weekend in league history, having played a total of 31 games in two venues. The league makes a historical first again this weekend when it stages its games at the Sisters of Mary School Girlstown in Talisay with the assistance and initiative of Coach Van Halen Parmis who aside from organizing tournaments and serving as an assistant coach, also develops basketball programs with free clinics. The visit will coincide with clinics to be conducted for the students of the school. (FREEMAN)
