CH allows night market outside of Colon Street

Jean Marvette A. Demecillo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - At least 469 qualified vendors will be allowed to use two one-way streets in downtown Cebu City starting next week for the night market.

Geneveive Alcoseba, head of the Division for the Welfare of Urban Poor, said the Cebu City Transportation Office has approved the use of Borromeo Street corner Leon Kilat Street to Sanciangko Street and Legaspi Street corner D. Jakosalem Street to Manalili Street as venues for the market.

“It’s already ninety percent final kay CITOM (CCTO) nga recommendation. So far, mao ni ang identified nga pwede kay kanang duha puros na one-way and dili ta mag close og dalan, half of the road ra atong gamiton,” she told reporters.

Alcoseba said the initial plan is to start the night market next week since the city government will still install the standardized stalls and the electricity to be used by the vendors.

She said the 469 vendors underwent the process and had been validated by the office.

She said the vendors will be clustered into three so they can all be accommodated in the areas.

Alcoseba said the vendors should follow the rules that the city government would implement.

One of the qualifications of these vendors are they are voters of the city.

“Kaning night market mahulog ni siya nga livelihood. Atong klarohon nga walay bayad gawas sa twenty pesos or fifty pesos nga arkabala,” Alcoseba said.

Alcoseba said that personnel from the City Treasurers Office will be assigned to issue the ticket to the vendors. The vendors, however, have to pay for the cleaners, security officers and electricity. The amount is to be determined by the vendors themselves.

“Importante nga dili burden sa syudad. They should operate independently. We have to get the consensus of the majority. Pila man jud? Everything should be properly liquidated. Bawal ang kawatan ani. No room for kawatan nga mga organizer,” she said. (FREEMAN)
