PRO-7 director supports restoration of death penalty
CEBU, Philippines - Police Regional Office-7 director Noli Taliño supports the reimposition of the death penalty in the country, saying this would be a big help especially against heinous crimes.
"We support that. Alam naman natin na makakatulong 'yon sa mga heinous crimes na nangyayari sa ating bansa," he said.
Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III earlier said he supports the reimposition of the death penalty but it should limited only to high-level drug traffickers.
He said death penalty has a bigger chance of getting passed in Congress if it would only be limited to high-level drug traffickers or those that can dispose more than five kilos of shabu a week.
Because if not, Sotto said, many will object, not just the Church but also human rights groups in the country, as well as international groups.
If death penalty will be imposed in the country, according to Sotto, it would prevent drug manufacturers from making Philippines not only as a transshipment point but a manufacturing area as well.
Meanwhile, Taliño said there are no extrajudicial killings in Central Visayas.
"Dito sa Region 7, we have more than 200 deaths under investigation but we found out that these DUIs, ang perpetrators dito ay kapwa nila drug pushers," Taliño said.
"Parang rivalry nila (drug pushers)," he added.
These deaths are now being investigated by the police, Taliño said. (FREEMAN)
