The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  A four-month exhibit, called Art Park, is now ongoing around the parks of the Ayala Center Cebu. It features the thought-provoking and interesting stone-cast installations and sculptures of Juan Guido Lubanga, one of Cebu's

brilliant artists.

"The Cyclists."

Giving off the shifting feel of kinetic sculpture on water, the 26-inch high by 42-inch wide statue pieces resembling real-life bicycle riders are located at the fountains of Ayala Terraces. Inspired by today's fast-paced lifestyle, the installation promotes not only physical wellness but sustainable living as well.

"The Hands."

Located right above the water level of The Terraces fountain area, the artwork reflects a splitting image of a person's pointed finger. An allegory to the context of rising through social and political adversities, it gives life to the cliché, "There's no other way but up."

"Little People."

Evoking playful imagery, the piece provides a visual anchor for large spaces, emanating a monumental, yet non-intimidating feel in its volume and heft.

"The Giant's Feet."

Installed at the fountain area of the new expansion wing roof deck, it is regarded by most spectators as a piece designed to mirror the Christian scripture of Jesus walking on water, also an allusion of faith and tranquility amidst ordeals.

"Thinker."

An interpretation of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin's timeless bronze sculpture 'Le Penseur', this Lubanga work embodies the significance of knowledge and philosophy in a sleek design.

"The Family."

A circular figure in the garden of the Ayala's latest expansion, it is a stone-cast masterpiece highlighting the importance of society's basic unit. With forms suggesting oneness and connectivity, the artwork reflects the significance of family being an integral part of the Filipino culture.

Launched first in 2009 in Greenbelt Makati, Art Park celebrates the country's homegrown talents, collaborating with notable local artists to transform spaces at Ayala Malls into one magnificent canvas and fluid gallery where art can best be experienced up close. It aims to let people appreciate the wonders of art in an informal and unrestrained setting.

Lubanga's public art sculptures remain at Ayala Center Cebu until December 15.
