Kapuso hearthrobs in concert

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Four Kapuso leading men are taking the challenge of proving themselves not only as singers but certified concert artists when they take the Music Museum stage on September 23 in a show billed as “Oh, Boy.”

Aljur Abrenica, Rocco Nacino, Derrick Monasterio and Jake Vargas will try to prove their mettle as singers in this concert where the result could either be a boost or bane to their careers.

Among the four, it is only Aljur who we can say is experienced when it comes to doing concerts since he previously staged two successful shows at the Music Museum before. But he is willing to share the spotlight with Rocco, Derrick and Jake, saying he believes in the potential of the three guys.

Aljur, born to a musically-inclined family, said he discovered his singing prowess when he joined a pageant during his high school years since he had to present something in the talent portion. He thought of singing and realized that he can carry a tune. It was at this time that he flirted with the idea of maybe making a career out of singing.

For Rocco, this is his first foray into serious singing, since this is the first time that he is joining a concert. While he belongs to a musically-inclined family and he also loves to sing, he took voice lessons to prepare himself for this show.

Rocco said that being in this concert is some sort of experiment cooked up by GMA Artist Center as it gives them the chance to do something out of their comfort zone. Doing a concert together is something new for all four of them.

On the other hand, Derrick discovered his singing ability when he joined a school choir. He says it pays to have vocal training. And he believes that his stint as a choir member helped develop his singing ability even more. He recently released a new album under GMA Records.

Jake is tagged as the Prince of Mall Shows as he had been winning the heart of each crowd he performs for. He became a recording artist in 2010 and among his hit songs were “Ngiti,” “Kahit Umiwas Pa,” “Miss You Like Crazy,” “Can Be Mine,” among others.

Aljur, Rocco, Derrick and Jake will have their solo spots as well as production numbers in the show that will focus on their individual strengths. Aside from singing, there will also be dancing and probably some sexy numbers in between to titillate the imagination of their female fans.

“We will be supporting each other in this concert,” said Aljur. The same sentiment was echoed by Rocco, Derrick and Jake.

They are also open to the idea that GMA will make them a boy band. In fact, Aljur said they are thinking of the possibility that if ever “Oh, Boy” becomes a hit concert, GMA Artist Center might be interested to bring the show on a tour, not only locally, but also abroad.

Since all four actors have their own legion of fans, it will be interesting who will get the loudest shrieks and cheers come concert night. Aljur, Rocco, Derrick and Jake would not want to be upstaged as far as fan following is concerned. They will most likely ask their fans for support, not only to ensure a full house, but to make sure that they will be all there to applaud for each number.

“We are giving our one hundred percent in the concert. We want to make the people happy and ourselves happy so we are going to give a good performance,” all four said.

The four GMA heartthrobs are excited to perform, as they promise a night full of fun and good music. Aside from jamming to sweet love songs and getting fuelled up with sultry dance moves, expect the show to be full of excitement and surprises.

Joining the show produced by Dreamstar Events, in cooperation with Bluewater Day Spa and GMA Corporate Communications, are Julie Anne San Jose as special guest, with Soc Mina as musical director and Marvin Caldito as stage director.

During the presscon’s Q&A, we queried the four Kapuso leading men a Miss Universe-like interrogation: If they win a million dollars, what will they do with it?

Rocco: “If you asked me that last year, I would answer I will use the money to finance the education of my sibling. But now, I will use the money to build my dream house and I will contribute to a foundation that supports cancer victims. Since my mom is a cancer survivor, we have been children who are suffering from cancer. If I have that much money, a portion of that will go to a foundation for cancer victims.”

Derrick: “I will put all of the money in a time deposit. I won’t spend a single cent since I’d rather keep the money for my children. I have a million dollars, my life will be stable.”

Jake: “I will put up a business. I will buy a condo unit and have it rented so I earn from it. I will keep the rest of the money in the bank.”

Aljur: “I will invest in a property or a business so it will earn. I will put half of it in a personal charity program which I will supervise myself when it comes to giving help to people who really need it most.”
