SWU wins but USPF, USJ-R falter on opening day
CEBU, Philippines - Southwestern University opened its title bid on a high note but two other Cebu teams faltered at the start of the Nestea Beach Volley Championships yesterday in Boracay Island.
Manned by reigning CESAFI MVP Alden Dave Cabaron and Rommel Pepito, SWU-Phinma Education blasted John Acain and Mart Tubil of Negros Oriental State University in straight sets, 21-11, 21-18.
However, defending men's champion University of Southern Philippines Foundation represented by Left John Tormis and newcomer John Derrick Jason Reyes has been relegated to the loser's bracket along with Kent Jay Verbosidad and Alastair Gairanod from the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
Tormis and Reyes fell at the hands of Philip Michael Bagalay and Paul John Cuzon of NCAA champions Mapua Institute of Technnology, 21-14, 21-15. Verbosidad and Gairanod also lost to the same Mapua tandem, 13-21, 24-22, 15-8.
USPF and USJ-R, thus, will now fight for survival against Colegio de San Agustin and Lyceum University, respectively, in do-or-die matches today. — (FREEMAN)
