Fake news, fake society

It is no lie that millennials comprise a huge part of society, and they are not immune to the many issues happening in the country.

One issue that widely affects millennials is the spread of what we call “fake news”.

Born at a time when technology is continually evolving, it is a given that most millennials are on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

These social media sites have been helpful to many since they were developed. Because of them, it is easier to disseminate information to people all over the world. The same social media sites have also been avenues for negative things, however.

These days, the spread of fake news on the Internet is getting out of hand.

As a journalism student, I am offended by how this type of news is sometimes more patronized than the legitimate ones. Fake news is an absolute stain on the profession.

Much as it saddens me, millennials are widely affected by the issue of “fake news” since most of us use social media as a way to destress and entertain ourselves.

I have a lot of friends who believe stories from pages that feature fake news. What is worse is that they also share the posts and influence others.

Millennials aren’t the ones who are at fault. Neither are those who share fake news. They are just the ones who are affected and victimized.

I have seen other posts from people who knowingly share fake news because they think the content is hilarious or entertaining.

There are people who do not realize that spreading fake news can lead to conflict and misinformation.

Fake news isn’t supposed to be treated as real news.

However, not everyone can separate one from the other. Millennials aren’t the only ones affected by this. Because of the numerous shares and likes that pieces of fake news garner on social media, plenty of people tend to believe it.

The proliferation of fake news consumes the people’s right to know the truth. It has altered the minds of people to make them believe in stories that are believable yet unreal. I hate to say it, but it has become a part of today’s society even if it shouldn’t.

Clearly, this disease should be prevented and completely cured. It is everyone’s job to heal those who are contaminated by it. Each and every one of us should make sure that it does not spread. Otherwise, the world we live in now will be ruled by lies and deception instead of correct and truthful information.

Let’s do everything we can to keep our country from becoming a “fake society.”
