Iligan City’s Doña Juana A. Lluch Memorial Central School launched a reading program earlier this month. Bukas Aklat Sa Pag-angat, or BASA, features a BASA Kubo, a nipa hut where reading materials such as encyclopedias, books on general subjects and storybooks are made available for students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Visitors from the Department of Education (DepEd) division of Iligan City joined the program launch held last Sept. 18.

Under the BASA Kubo program, students who fall into the non-readers and slow readers category will undergo scheduled reading activities led by seven Grade 4 teachers and an everyday engagement with the parents. The facility will be open from Monday to Friday, and other students are also encouraged to visit.

Parents sign up for BASA KUBO.

Parents and teachers who will handle the training signed an agreement for the implementation of the program.

“With the availability of the reading materials, the program you have, and the support of the parents there is a greater chance of improving the reading skills of the learners,” said Henry Abueva, education program supervisor in English of the DepEd’s Iligan City Division.

Abueva said they are hopeful that those who have reading problems will eventually improve and that more teachers would come and visit the BASA Kubo.
