Outcome-based education promoted in Phl
MANILA, Philippines - Sociologist William Spady is seeking to promote outcome-based education (OBE) in the country.
In a recent press conference held in Quezon City, he said the Philippines stands to gain a lot from OBE.
“Unlike previous learning strategies where a learner undergoes assessment to see how much one has absorbed lessons, OBE is more concerned with how successful one is in achieving what needs to be accomplished in terms of skills and strategies,” Spady said.
He said that when he conceptualized OBE in 1968, he observed that the US education system was more bent on how to make them achieve good scores.
In his book, Outcome-Based Education: Critical Issues and Answers, Spady acknowledged all students can learn and succeed, but not on the same day in the same way.
At the press conference, a new logo and slogan for the Spady Center was also unveiled. Danda Garcia-Buhain of the Resource for Educators and Academic Professionals (REAP) of the Rex Group of Companies said Spady’s visit was timely since “the Philippine education system is in dire need of a makeover.”
REAP provides professional development programs for educators and school administrators.
