Signal No. 2 up over parts of Luzon as 'Maymay' intensifies slightly off Ilocos Sur
MANILA, Philippines — Signal No. 2 has been hoisted over parts of Northern and Central Luzon as Tropical Storm Maymay (international name: Kujira) slightly intensifies while moving erratically over the sea west of Ilocos Sur.
In a 2 p.m. bulletin issued by state weather bureau PAGASA on August 5, the center of Maymay was estimated at 160 kilometers west-southwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
The tropical storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near its center, with gusts of up to 90 kph, as it slowly moves northeastward.
PAGASA warned that gale-force winds with speeds ranging from 62 to 88 kph pose a minor to moderate threat to life and property within 24 hours in the following areas currently under Signal No. 2:
- Ilocos Sur
- La Union (Northern and central portions: Luna, Caba, Santol, Bauang, City of San Fernando, San Juan, Bagulin, Aringay, Bangar, San Gabriel, Burgos, Naguilian, Bacnotan, Sudipen, Balaoan)
- Pangasinan (Northwestern portion: Anda, Bolinao, Bani)
- Abra (Southwestern portion: Manabo, Pidigan, Langiden, Luba, Boliney, Sallapadan, Bucloc, Tubo, Villaviciosa, Pilar, Peñarrubia, San Isidro, San Quintin, Bangued, Bucay, Danglas, La Paz, Tayum, Lagangilang, Dolores, Licuan-Baay, Daguioman, San Juan)
- Mountain Province (Western portion: Besao, Tadian, Bauko, Sagada, Sabangan, Bontoc)
- Benguet (Northwestern portion: Mankayan, Kapangan, Kibungan, Sablan, Bakun, La Trinidad, Tublay, Atok, Buguias)
Areas under Signal No. 1 will experience strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph (Beaufort 6 to 7) within a 36-hour warning lead time, posing a minimal to minor threat to life and property:
- Ilocos Norte
- La Union (Rest of the province)
- Pangasinan (Rest of the province)
- Apayao
- Abra (Rest of the province)
- Kalinga
- Mountain Province (Rest of the province)
- Ifugao
- Benguet (Rest of the province)
- Mainland Cagayan
- Isabela
- Quirino
- Nueva Vizcaya
- Zambales (Northern portion: Candelaria, Santa Cruz, Masinloc, Palauig)
- Tarlac (Northern portion: Mayantoc, San Clemente, Camiling, Santa Ignacia, Gerona, Paniqui, Moncada, San Manuel, Anao, Ramos, Pura, Victoria)
- Nueva Ecija (Northern portion: Carranglan, Lupao, Cuyapo, Talugtug, Nampicuan, Guimba, Science City of Muñoz, San Jose City, Pantabangan, Bongabon, Rizal, Llanera, Talavera, Santo Domingo, General Mamerto Natividad, Quezon, Licab)
- Aurora (Northern and central portions: Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao, Baler, San Luis, Maria Aurora)
Maymay is projected to move generally eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union between Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning, August 6.
It will then traverse the landmass of Northern and Central Luzon. The storm is expected to remain a tropical storm prior to landfall before weakening into a tropical depression by Thursday morning.
The state weather bureau anticipates that Maymay could further weaken into a low pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening.
