Randy Santiago is still at it at 60

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

Randy Santiago’s dad is the famed action-director Pablo Santiago, one of the trusted and favorite directors of action king Fernando Poe, Jr. As a young man, Randy was exposed to his dad’s job as a director and was given the chance to be his assistant director in some of his movies.

But Randy found another way to enter mainstream showbiz via singing. He was a member of the Cicada Band before going solo. He has a background in singing since he was a member of the famed Kundirana when he was still in high school at La Salle Greenhills.

Would you believe that Randy is turning 61 years old this November? Yet he continues to entertain his fans through his music and hosting gigs. He is one of the hosts of “Sing-Galing Sing-Celebrity Edition” that will start airing on TV5 this Saturday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m.

“If you find enjoyment in watching the daily edition of ‘Sing-Galing,’ then I guarantee you that the ‘Sing-Galing Sing-Celebrity’ edition is more exciting and fun. Expect the unexpected. And for the celebrities who are planning to join the contest, start practicing via karaoke.”

The singer-TV host added that watching “Sing-galing Sing-Celebrity” edition is a good stress-reliever because of the entertainment it gives to contestants and viewers.

Asked if he still has more aspirations as a singer-actor, Randy said he is hoping to be invited as guest in the action-series “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” where his brothers Rowell and Raymart are mainstays. Rowel plays President Oscar Hidalgo while Raymart is a member of the Task Force Agila headed by Coco Martin.

What could be the reaction of Ms. Susan Roces now that the Senate approved on third and final reading the bill renaming Roosevelt Avenue in Quezon City to Fernando Poe Avenue?

FPJ ran for president in 2004 but lost to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. But many people believe he won the elections. He died on December 14, 2004 after suffering from stroke.

The old house of FPJ’s family was located in Roosevelt Avenue. The original proposal was to have Del Monte Avenue renamed to FPJ Avenue but the Franciscan order petitioned to retain the name because of the historical significance of San Francisco Del Monte.

Twenty senators voted “yes” and there was no negative vote. Sen. Grace Poe, who abstained from voting, thanked her for supporting Bill HB7499, most especially Sen. Manny Pacquiao.

The desire to give back to the industry which has been good to him inspired Arjo Atayde to put up Feelmaking Productions Inc. and produce his first film titled “Hey Joe,” a family drama. He also wrote the story himself.

Arjo said he wants to share simple but beautiful stories that can be appreciated globally and raise the stock of Filipino filmmaking to another level.

The actor and his team believe that if the workplace atmosphere is positive, the output will be positive as well.

Award-winning actor Christian Bables is once again playing a gay role in the Joel Lamangan film, “Bekis on the Run.” Written by Ricky Lee, the film will begin streaming Sept. 17 on Vivamax.

“But it is different from those I did in ‘Die Beautiful’ and ‘Panti Sisters’ where I was a flamboyant gay and a cross-dresser. But those helped a lot in making me look credible in my current role,” said Christian.

The movie also stars Diego Loyzaga, who plays his brother,  Kylie Verzosa as Adriana, the ex-girlfriend of Diego, and Sean De Guzman as Martin, ex-boyfriend of Christian.

Direk Joel was able to convince Christian to do a bed scene and torrid kissing scene with Sean. Aside from it being a comedy-drama, “Bekis on the Run” will tackle corruption and the issue of gays in the military.
