Online vs traditional class

READERS VIEWS - The Freeman

In the 16th century, the idea of learning spread that childhood should have time for learning, and schools for children were developed as places of learning. Last 1863, the first-ever educational system in the Philippines started, wherein students needed to go to schools and learn. However, in the present, we need to adopt the new normal or online classes amidst the pandemic. It has been one month since the online summer class started, and it has been debated up until now whether to push through the online classes for the next academic year or not. I am one of the students enrolled in an online summer class.

The actual face-to-face classroom learning was the best and first option to learn, especially for the young students and those who are one step closer to the corporate world. Students can gather together and share ideas about the topic, and this would help them know more and understand the discussion. Students can discuss their learning which can help others learn and understand, too. Teamwork and oneness are present. Teachers can also easily evaluate and know their student's weaknesses and strengths because they can interact well with the students, which is their primary duty as a teacher. The student's clarification and queries can be easily entertained since the teacher and student’s interaction is there. The student's clarification and queries will greatly help the teacher to assess if the student learns from the discussion.

As for online classes, we must have internet, laptops, and gadgets that might affect the students and teachers. Online classes tend to have less interaction with students and teachers due to the distance. In our video conferences, the teachers gave us the inputs, and we learned from it through self-study. The teacher has difficulty assessing their students whether they learned from the discussion or not. The platform that we were using could be accessed through emails, group chats, video conferencing software/app, etc. It may be another burden from the students and teachers.

With online class, I had to strive harder than what I used to. I had to self-study since some of the teachers had problems with internet connectivity and were not able to share with their students their learnings and life experiences that would help the students.

In conclusion, the online platform of our learning is way different from what we used to have. Students and youngsters are very flexible since we are born in the world of technology but some students and teachers did not have the privilege of using online class platform. It’s true that we are still able to learn from the two but, for me, face-to-face it is more reliable, excellent and effective.
